I am so excited about my new budget tool: You need a Budget. I started using it, and it is fairly intuitive. More importantly, though, Jesse and his adherents, have a forum, and answer questions fairly easily. That's exactly what I was looking for.

Simple, Effective, Powerful Budgeting System

Now I am using Quicken to keep track of my various accounts and YNAB to cover my cash flow. It is an exciting product. Plus, you can get a 10 day course e-mailed to you! It is definately worth the money. You do not need to have used excel before -- it is a simple system. If you order through my site, I do get a commission on your order -- but, that is not why I am giving it it's own page. I only do that for a product that I truly believe in: this is the best budgeting tool I have ever seen.

HOW DOES YNAB WORK?

Basically, it is an excel spread sheet that is designed to allow you to keep track of your income and expenses by simple categories (which you can change and add, if you want). What makes it different is that, if possible, from the start, you are trying to use money you already have for your first month's budget. Thus, any money you make this month is put aside to be used in the next month (unless you have more than you need for your budget in which case, you can save or spend it at will).

Hmmmm. Sounds complicated? But it is actually simple once you get the hang of it. The people who sell the product are very helpful as well. The idea behind it is to stop living paycheck to paycheck. Hence, if you put all of your energy into it, you can accumulate enough money to pay a month's worth of bills the month BEFORE those bills are due. This prevents you from ever having to worry about where your money is coming from -- you'll already have it.
